Distinctive Unit Insignia
A silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in width overall consisting of an erect silver color eagle feather with black tip divided by a cleft at the top and surmounting a maroon Greek cross on a blue background all beneath an arced red scroll, the ends curving inwards and terminating at the corners of the lower vertical arm of the cross inscribed "THE PRESERVATION OF LIFE" in silver letters.
Maroon and white are the colors used for Medical organizations. The cross, a symbol of aid and assistance together with the notched eagle feather, symbolic of many wounds and a mark of honor of the Indian tribes of the Dakotas, allude to the basic mission and the rich Indian heritage of North Dakota, the present location and place of activation of the 311th Evacuation Hospital.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 5 June 1973.
